What is Educational Therapy?

abacus-1866497_1920.jpg

The Association of Educational Therapists (AET) defines an educational therapist as, “A professional who combines educational and therapeutic approaches for evaluation, remediation, case management, and communication/advocacy on behalf of children, adolescents, and adults with learning disabilities or learning problems”.
As an educational therapist I combine a variety of educational and therapeutic approaches with each student to assess and remediate their unique needs. A delicate balance of strengths and weaknesses are addressed in each session to maintain and strengthen the student’s feelings of self-worth while addressing areas of need. It is my goal to improve each client’s attitude and behaviors toward learning. Compensatory strategies are taught in order to foster independence and promote success in school and in life.

After graduating from California State University of Northridge with her Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology, Kimberly started her career in behavioral therapy. She began by working in the home and public school settings as a behavior interventionist. After working in the special education field at Glendale Unified School district, she decided that teaching students with learning disabilities and special needs was her passion and returned to CSUN for their special education teaching credential program.
